The day of remembrance was dedicated to the renowned poet who resided at the Mead in Wantage between 1951 and 1972.

The Irish poet celebrated the birth of Betjeman’s daughter with his poem ‘Candida,’ and another well-known poem contains the line: ‘Let John Betjeman call for me in a car.’ When Betjeman’s posting in Dublin ended in 1943, his departure made the front page of The Irish Times.
