Bowes-Lyon family. The Bowes-Lyon family descends from George Bowes of Gibside and Streatlam Castle (1701–1760), a County Durham landowner and politician, through John Bowes, 9th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, chief of the Clan Lyon.

John Bowes (17 July 1737 – 7 March 1776), born John Lyon, was the 9th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne and one of the ancestors of Queen Elizabeth II. The Earl was famous for his appearance; he was known as "the beautiful Lord Strathmore". [1]
