John J. Pershing‘s Address from France (recorded April 1918) General of the Armies John Joseph Pershing GCB (September 13, 1860 – July 15, 1948), nicknamed " Black Jack ", was a senior American United States Army officer. He served most famously as the commander of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) during World War I from 1917 to 1920.

John Joseph Pershing nació el 13 de septiembre de 1860 en el condado de Laclede, Missouri, en el seno de una familia de comerciantes. Tenía veintiún años cuando entró a la academia militar de West Point de donde se graduó con honores en 1886. Ese mismo año ingresó al Ejército de los Estados Unidos con el rango de Teniente Segundo.
