He was gazetted G.C.B. on 3 March 1834, and created Viscount Ponsonby, of Imokilly in the County of Cork, on 20 April 1839. He had previously married, on 13 January 1803, Lady Frances Villiers, seventh daughter of George Villiers, 4th Earl of Jersey.
Maria Ponsonby, Viscountess Duncannon (11 May 1787 – 19 March 1834), formerly Lady Maria Fane, was the wife of John Ponsonby, 4th Earl of Bessborough. She died before he inherited the earldom and thus was never Countess of Bessborough, but three of her sons were successively earls of Bessborough. Early life.

John Ponsonby married Dorothy Briscoe of Crofton in Cumberland and their son succeeded to the Cumberland estates. He married, secondly, Elizabeth Ffolliott, a widow of Richard Wingfield of Powerscourt. He came to Ireland in the army of Cromwell and soon became a Colonel in the army.

He was one of six children born to John Ponsonby Conroy (1759-1797), an Irish barrister from County Roscommon, and his wife Margaret Wilson (d. 1845). Both of his parents were native to Ireland. The younger Conroy was privately educated in Dublin.
He married (1805) Lady Maria Fane, third daughter of the 10th earl of Westmorland by his first wife, Sarah Anne (daughter and heir of Robert Child of Osterley Park, Middlesex) with whom he had eight sons and six daughters.
