John Maurice Hartman (July 3, 1923 – September 15, 1983) was an American jazz singer, known for his rich baritone voice and recordings of ballads. He sang and recorded with Earl Hines ' and Dizzy Gillespie 's big bands and with Erroll Garner .
In truth, defining a jazz singer is as difficult as defining jazz itself. Like most of his peers, Hartman straddled the fence, finding an audience that appreciated both classic pop and straight-ahead jazz. Hartman’s audience was never as big as it could have been, and it’s anyone’s guess why.
