Romance tradition elaborates on how Arthur came into possession of Excalibur. In Robert de Boron's c. 1200 French poem Merlin, the first known tale to mention the "sword in the stone" motif, Arthur obtained the British throne by pulling a sword from an anvil sitting atop a stone that appeared in a churchyard on Christmas Eve.

Arthur Pendragon (often called Wart or King Arthur) is the protagonist of Disney's 1963 animated feature film The Sword in the Stone. He is an orphan boy who becomes king of England thanks to his ability to pull a legendary sword from a stone.
Evil men broke into houses and took what they wanted. Travelers on the roads were jumped and robbed. The people of England lived in fear. Far away from the city in a quiet place lived good knight Sir Ector, with his two sons. His first son was named Garth and the younger son, Arthur, had been adopted as a baby.

The sword was originally introduced in Geoffrey of Monmouth's History of the Kings of Britain (1136 CE) as Caliburnus (or Caliburn) and further developed by later writers before Malory immortalized it in his work.
