Shanahan was born in Minneapolis, while his father, Mike Shanahan, coached at the University of Minnesota. [2] He attended Saratoga High School in Saratoga, California, in 1994, while his father worked as offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers. [3]

At the time, Kyle's dad, Mike Shanahan, was the head coach of the Denver Broncos and in the midst of a highly successful run that included back-to-back Super Bowl wins in 1997 and 1998.
