On May 15, 1800, a notice was placed in Brattleboro’s Federal Galaxy newspaper: “Ran away from the subscriber … an indebted boy named Thomas Gould, about 18 years old…. All persons are forbidden to harbour or trust said fellow on my account, as I will not pay any debts of his contracting.”.
