Little Red Riding Hood is a European fairy tale about a young girl and a sly wolf. Its origins can be traced back to several pre-17th-century European folk tales. The two best known versions were written by Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm.

The earliest written version was “Le Petit Chaperon Rouge” (English title: “Little Red Riding Hood”), published by French storyteller Charles Perrault in 1697 in his collection of fairy tales Contes de ma mère l’oye ( Tales of Mother Goose ). Perrault most likely adapted the story from an oral folktale.

Perrault had written "Little Red Riding Hood" as a warning to readers about strangers preying on young girls walking through the forest. He concludes his fairy tale with a moral, cautioning women and young girls about the dangers of trusting men.
