In 2016 a competition was run to find a design company willing to take on a permanent lighting project on the River Thames, covering 15 bridges, from Tower Bridge to Albert Bridge. A design by Leo Villareal was chosen as the winner in November 2016. This will be one of the UK's largest ever public art commissions. The first phase - Southwark Bridge, Millennium Bridge, London Bridge and Cannon Street Bridge - was switched on on 17 July 2019. Illumination is by LEDs and replaces former less efficient forms of lighting in places. The installation’s colour scheme is in part influenced by famous paintings of the Thames, as noted by The Times: “The colours and tones used in the paintings of those inveterate Thames-watchers Monet, Whistler and Turner provide some of the inspiration, while at Westminster [bridge] a shade of green was chosen to complement the colour of the leather upholstery in the House of Commons”. An article in The Guardian stated: "The project... has been much trickier a...

The 1831 London Bridge was the last project of engineer John Rennie and was completed by his son, John Rennie. By 1962, it was not sturdy enough to carry the increased load of traffic; the bridge was sold by the City of Londonin April 1968 to make way for its replacement. The purchaser, Robert P. McCulloch, was an entrepreneur and real estate developer who founded Lake Havasu City. He installed the bridge to attract tourists and retirement home buyers to his properties there.
