Lord John Russell served as Prime Minister twice. During his long ministerial career, he played a key role in Great Reform Act of 1832, and served as both Home Secretary and Foreign Secretary. As Prime Minister over 1846-52, he led a moderately reforming government, despite the lack of a Parliamentary majority.
His paternal grandfather, Lord John Russell, later 1st Earl Russell (1792–1878), had twice been prime minister in the 1840s and 1860s. A member of Parliament since the early 1810s, he met with Napoleon Bonaparte in Elba.
