Until his own assassination in 1979, her first cousin Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, kept a photograph of Maria beside his bed in memory of the crush he had upon her. In 1910, Louis met the Romanov sisters.

She was absolutely lovely.” Although the pair would never meet again, Mountbatten kept a picture of Maria Romanov near his bedside until his death.
Tatiana was considered the most elegant, but it was Maria, with her big blue eyes, full lips and lustrous brown hair who won the heart of her cousin Louis “Dickie” Mountbatten. “I was determined to marry her,” wrote Lord Mountbatten.
