Lucretia Garfield. Lucretia Garfield ( née Rudolph; April 19, 1832 – March 14, 1918) was the first lady of the United States from March to September 1881, as the wife of James A. Garfield, the 20th president of the United States. Born in Garrettsville, Ohio, Garfield first met her husband at Geauga Seminary.

James Garfield and Lucretia Rudolph probably should have never married. They were of very different upbringings ~ and temperament. Born in a log cabin in November 1831, James was the baby of the family, the youngest of the Garfield children, the one who was doted upon.
After what was called “the funeral of the century” in Cleveland, OH, Lucretia Garfield led a quiet, yet social life in widowhood. Newspapers referred to her as “Discreet Crete” and the “Vanishing First Lady” because she ducked all publicity.
She had a keen intellect, an interest in science and current events, and a natural ability in art, languages, and interior decoration. Lucretia was pragmatic and adept at handling construction projects, personally overseeing many of the additions, renovations, and redecorating projects in the Garfield homes throughout the years.
