In 1917, when Kennedy was fit enough for home duties, he was appointed aide-de-camp to General Sir Bruce Hamilton, GCB, KCVO (1857–1936), the General Officer Commanding Northern Army and Army Home Defence throughout World War One.
In 1979, he earned a Bachelor of Civil Law degree with first class honours from Oxford University, where he was a member of Magdalen College and studied under Rupert Cross and John H.C. Morris. Early career. Kennedy was a partner in the New Orleans and Baton Rouge law firm Chaffe McCall from 1985 to 1987 and 1992 to 1996.

Magdalen College was founded in 1458 by William Waynflete, Bishop of Winchester, and Lord Chancellor. He wanted a college on the grandest scale, and his foundation was the largest in Oxford, with 40 Fellows, 30 scholars (known at Magdalen as Demies), and a large choir for his Chapel.
