Born in a Hasidic Jewish family, he harvested images from folklore and Jewish traditions to inform his art.
Biografía. Nació en Liozna, Gobernación de Vítebsk (hoy en Bielorrusia) y era el mayor de nueve hermanos provenientes de una familia de judíos. El nombre de su madre era Felga-Ita. Fue uno de los más importantes artistas del vanguardismo y en su trabajo se encuentran resonancias de fantasías y sueños.
