Medical illustrations can be illustrations or animations that are created to visually represent medical or biological subjects that can be difficult to explain only using words. History [ edit] Medical illustrations have been made possibly since the beginning of medicine [1] in any case for hundreds (or thousands) of years.
Medical illustration is a small field with fewer than an estimated 2,000 trained practitioners in the world. Yet, medical illustration is also a diverse field with most professionals developing specialties. Some specialize by subject matter, such as surgery, veterinary medicine, or ophthalmology.
Medical illustrators usually complete courses in anatomy and physiology, biology, art, chemistry, design, graphic art, computer illustration, and medical terminology. Medical illustrators create many different types of graphic representations for a variety of purposes.
