While manuscripts written near the end of the Old English period are written in West Saxon, when they reappear in the twelfth century, they are written in the author’s or scribe’s native dialect.

The Middle English period began in 1066, following the Norman conquest of England. The Normans were a group of Vikings (Norsemen) descended from modern-day Denmark, Norway and Iceland who settled in northern France during the late 9th century. In 1066 they conquered England during the infamous battle of Hastings.
