The Mount Vernon Seminary and College was a private women's college in Washington, D.C. It was purchased by George Washington University in 1999, and became the Mount Vernon Campus of The George Washington University.

As the first school of higher education available to women in Washington, D.C, Mount Vernon Seminary and College has an important place in this city’s heritage, in higher education, and in American women’s history.
Intended as a “Family and Day School for Young Ladies,” Mount Vernon Seminary offered a six-year course, including two post-high school years. 1880 The school moved to 1100 M Street N.W. Washington, D.C.
This campus has been significant in both girls' education in DC and Naval history nationwide. The 38.6-acre Mount Vernon Seminary for Girls campus includes 16 buildings, generally brick with Georgian Revival or simple Colonial Revival detailing. The campus was formerly the home of the Mount Vernon Seminary and College, a private women’s high school and college. This educational institution was founded in 1868 by Elizabeth J. Somers, who played an important role in promoting women's education.
Mount Vernon Seminary for Girls, founded in 1875, was the first non-sectarian female boarding school established in Washington, D.C. Its founder, Elizabeth Somers opened the school in her own home at 204 F Street, NW, teaching eight day students and two boarders using a progressive curriculum.
