Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) refers to the delivery of positive pressure ventilation through a noninvasive interface (eg, nasal mask, face mask, or nasal plugs), rather than an invasive interface (endotracheal tube, tracheostomy). NIV can be used as ventilatory support for patients with acute or chronic respiratory failure.
