Old English / Anglo-Saxon was first written with a version of the Runic alphabet known as Anglo-Saxon or Anglo-Frisian runes, or futhorc/fuþorc. This alphabet was an extended version of Elder Futhark with between 26 and 33 letters. Anglo-Saxon runes were used probably from the 5th century AD until about the 10th century.
The Old English Latin alphabet generally consisted of about 24 letters, and was used for writing Old English from the 8th to the 12th centuries. Of these letters, most were directly adopted from the Latin alphabet , two were modified Latin letters ( Æ , Ð ), and two developed from the runic alphabet ( Ƿ , Þ ).

Some letters from the Old English alphabet which modern English has lost: þ, ð both represent the same sounds as modern th, as e.g. in thin or then; æ and a represent distinct sounds in Old English, formed with the tongue respectively at the front and back of the mouth.
