Imagine this: he’s this fantastic actor, playing all sorts of characters, making us laugh or getting us all serious, and then bam – an unexpected eye injury.

  7. It's a contact lens. Throughout the movie it switches which eye it's in as well. (The gag is that the kid doesn't know which eye to look, so it changes and you as the audience doesn't know either, if anyone's curious). If it is was VFX, it would have been needed in every shot with Paul, adding up to hundreds, so that doesn't seem likely.
