Exodus 13:21–22 explains that God gave them the pillar of cloud by day to lead them in the way He wanted them to go and the pillar of fire by night to give light.

The pillars of cloud and fire are first mentioned in Exodus 13, shortly after Moses leads the Israelites out of their captivity in Egypt. The narrative states that the pillar of cloud went ahead of them by day to guide their way, and the pillar of fire by night, to give them light. [1]

When Israel left Succoth and reached the edge of the wilderness, Yahweh went before them “by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light” ( Exod 13:21 ).
