Benjamin Franklin was appointed by the Continental Congress as the first postmaster general in 1775; he had previously served as deputy postmaster for the Thirteen Colonies since 1753. The formal office of the United States postmaster general was established by act of government on September 22, 1789.

In 1775, the Continental Congress appointed Benjamin Franklin Postmaster General (PMG). Franklin had previously served in that post under the Crown. He was followed by his son-in-law, Richard Bache, and Ebenezer Hazard. The first Postmaster General of the new United States of America was Samuel Osgood.
Louis DeJoy (born June 20, 1957) is an American businessman serving as the 75th U.S. postmaster general. He was appointed in May 2020 by the Board of Governors of the United States Postal Service (USPS) .
