Biography. Son of Duke Ernest I and brother of Prince Albert, who married Queen Victoria. He had no children so his title was inherited by his nephew, Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh (q.v.).

He was the elder son of Ernest III, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld and his first wife Princess Louise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg.
