If the southerners get stomped, there is no way they're trying again within living memory. I do agree that a status quo ante bellum wouldn't satisfy either side. I'm no expert, but what Lincoln should do is occupy the states that rebelled and effectively enact reconstruction there. Another president should enact compensated emancipation.
