  3. Basic Pay. $16,975/mo. General is a four-star General Officer rank, and the highest rank attainable by an officer besides the wartime-only General of the Army rank. The Army can have a maximum of seven four-star generals at any one time, with several of these slots filled permanently, like the Army Chief of Staff, who is a four-star general.

  4. The rank of general ranks above a three-star lieutenant general and below the special wartime five-star ranks of General of the Army or General of the Air Force. The Marine Corps and Space Force do not have an established grade above general. The pay grade of general is O-10.

  5. Nine Americans have held five-star ranks, but none currently. The highest ranks, senior to the five-star ranks, are General of the Armies (in the Army) and Admiral of the Navy (in the Navy). These ranks are sometimes called six-star ranks, but holders of the ranks have never used six-star insignia.
