Officially known as the Americans, the club was also referred to by the media as the Somersets -- after owner Charles Somers -- as well as the Plymouth Rocks, Speed Boys, Puritans and Pilgrims in its infancy. But on Dec. 18, 1907, the franchise adopted the name Red Sox.
