  4. Overview. Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption is a novella by Stephen King, first published in 1982 as part of his collection Different Seasons. The story is narrated by Red, a long-term inmate at Shawshank State Penitentiary, and tells the tale of his friendship with Andy Dufresne, a banker who is wrongfully convicted of murder.
