Des llavors, la fortuna de la arquitectura pal·ladiana va ser tan gran que va dominar l'arquitectura anglesa fins que no va ser modificada d'una manera més elegant per Robert Adam (1728-1792), els treballs varien entre el Neoclassicisme pintoresc i un neogòtic i en versió classista.
El principal rival de Adam fue William Chambers (1723-1796), otro escocés, pero nacido en Suecia. Hizo la mayor parte de su trabajo en Londres, con un pequeño número de casas en Escocia. Fue nombrado tutor de arquitectura del Príncipe de Gales, más tarde George III, y en 1766, con Robert Adam, como Arquitecto del Rey.
