Chuunin Exams
Gaara is a ninja from the Hidden Sand Village. Rock Lee is from the Hidden Leaf Village. They meet for the first time when Gaara goes with his siblings and sensei to the Hidden Leaf Village to participate in the Chuunin Exam. Their first encounter is in the preliminary round of the Chunin Exams, where they are matched against each other in a one-on-one battle. The fight starts with Gaara demonstrating his mastery over his sand-based techniques, effortlessly deflecting Rock Lee's attacks. Rock Lee, despite his speed and agility, struggles to penetrate Gaara's sand defenses. Gaara's sand is incredibly dense and malleable, allowing him to form impenetrable shields and launch powerful projectiles. Undeterred by Gaara's overwhelming strength, Rock Lee unleashes his Hidden Lotus technique, a series of rapid strikes that concentrate his power into a single, devastating blow. Rock Lee's speed and precision catch Gaara off guard, landing a significant hit that cracks Gaara's sand armor. Gaara, startled by the impact, undergoes a partial transformation, revealing a monstrous form with enhanced sand manipulation abilities. His sand becomes even denser and more lethal as he unleashes a barrage of attacks, overwhelming Rock Lee's defenses. Despite his best efforts, Rock Lee is ultimately defeated by Gaara and he's badly injured and is hospitalized. Gaara gets into Lee's hospital room and attempts to kill him while he is unconscious. However, this attempt is unsuccessful, and Lee is saved by Naruto and Shikamaru. Lee spends a long time in hospital, recovering from his injuries and nearly having to give up being a shinobi.
Sasuke Recovery Mission
They meet again during the Sasuke Recovery Mission arc, and together they fight Kimimaro. During the fight Gaara apologizes to Lee for what he did to him during the Chuunin exams. Lee accepts his apologies and says that the experiences he went through just helped him get stronger. After Kimimaro's death, Gaara helps Lee walk back to Konoha, leaning on each other.
Naruto Shippuden
Team Guy participates in the mission of rescuing Gaara (who is now the Fifth Kazekage). Along with the rest of his team, Lee helps Naruto and Kakashi fight Deidara to recover Gaara's body back. Lee is present when Gaara is revived by Chiyo. During the Fourth Shinobi War, Gaara helps Lee, Tenten and Guy escape after Madara starts destroying the battlefield, using a sand wave. Later, when Madara and Guy are fighting, Gaara remembers when he and Lee fought during the Chuunin exams and Lee used that very same technique. When the Eight Gates open, the user of the technique will die. Gaara worries about Lee having to witness his sensei dying. However, Guy doesn't die, as he's saved by Naruto, and Lee and Gaara are left to look after him. In Shippuden episode 400, Gaara says that Rock Lee has been a great inspiration for him, as he's a hardworking person. At the end of Shippuden, Gaara and his siblings visit Konoha to attend to Naruto and Hinata wedding. Lee and Gaara meet again and are seen chatting together. Lee and Gaara share more scenes together in Spin-offs and videogames. For example in Rock Lee's Springtime of Youth, In Boruto, both are single parents, Rock Lee having Metal Lee and Gaara having Shinki.
