Scharnhorst was a German capital ship, alternatively described as a battleship or battlecruiser, of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine. She was the lead ship of her class, which included her sister ship Gneisenau.

Some debate still exists as to her appropriate classification as either a battleship or a battlecruiser. Scharnhorst was sister to Gneisenau, also named for a Prussian general who, with General Scharnhorst, rejuvenated the dispirited Prussian Army in the latter days of the Napoleonic Wars.
