Hamnet stands behind Shakespeare, left of centre. Hamnet Shakespeare ( baptised 2 February 1585 – buried 11 August 1596) was the only son of William Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway, and the fraternal twin of Judith Shakespeare. [1] [2] [3] [4] He died at the age of 11.

Some of Shakespeare’s most poignant poetry and dramatic moments are related to the death of a child. Trying to tie the death of his son to anything Shakespeare wrote is a vain exercise, however, and, indeed, most attempts to gauge Shakespeare’s personal feelings with reference to his works fail.
