9 de ene. de 2024 · Painted Horses - In 2007, the "Horses in the City" project began to celebrate Shawnee's part of Oklahoma's centennial. Today, nearly three dozen of these "painted horses" stand proud throughout Shawnee, hand-painted by local artists. Several are located downtown. Get the list of horses here.

In the 1800s, some Shawnee people were forcibly removed from the valley and resettled in the area between Hog Creek and Little River, as well as Little Axe in what is now Cleveland County, Oklahoma. These two bands – the Big Jim Band and White Turkey Band – eventually organized into the modern Absentee Shawnee people.
Shawnee grew from 22,053 in 1940 to 22,948 in 1950, 25,075 in 1970, and 26017 in 1990.
