History. Students at the Slade in 1905. The school traces its roots back to 1868 when lawyer and philanthropist Felix Slade (1788–1868) bequeathed funds to establish three Chairs in Fine Art, to be based at Oxford University, Cambridge University and University College London, where six studentships were endowed.

Fue creada en 1871, con una dotación del filántropo y coleccionista de arte Felix Slade como una de las tres cátedras establecidas por él en 1868, siendo su primer catedrático sir Edward Poynter, futuro presidente de la Royal Society. Desde el primer momento la institución admitió a mujeres.
La Slade Professorship of Fine Art –en español: cátedra Slade de Bellas Artes – es la cátedra de Bellas Artes de mayor antigüedad de las universidades de Cambridge, Oxford ( All Souls College) and London. Esta última incorpora también a la Slade School of Fine Art.
