President Coolidge, which struck a mine in the harbor of Espiritu Santo in October 1942. The President Coolidge accommodated 990 passengers and a ship’s company of 324 crewmen. She could carry 600,000 cubic feet of cargo in her seven holds, one of which was refrigerated.

12 de dic. de 2012 · Information about safe entry into the harbor had been accidentally omitted from the Coolidge’s sailing orders, and upon her approach to Santo on October 26, 1942, the SS Coolidge, fearing Japanese submarines and unaware of the mine fields, attempted to enter the harbor through the largest and most obvious channel.
The Coolidge is now regarded as the most accessible shipwreck in the world for divers, for a ship of its size and type. In fact due to its location, depth, accessibility and the visibility of the water it lies in, it was named one of the top ten dive spots in the world.
Launched February 21, 1931 as SS President Coolidge named in honor of 30th U.S. President Calvin Coolidge sponsored by his wife, Mrs. Calvin C. Coolidge. Completed and delivered October 1, 1931. As a luxury liner, the ship had a first class section for 305, tourist class of 133 and steerage class of 402 passengers.
4 de oct. de 2023 · SS President Coolidge was one of two luxury passenger ships (the other being President Hoover) built by Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company of Newport News, VA, for Dollar Steamship Lines. The keel for President Coolidge was laid on 22 April 1930 and the ship was delivered on 1 October 1931. President Hoover was completed in 1930.
