In the theatrical release, Steppenwolf was exiled from Apokolips by Darkseid for failing to conquer Earth a millennium prior after his forces were defeated by a united front of humans, Amazons, Atlanteans, Olympians, and Earth's then-active Green Lantern, who subsequently took and scattered the three Mother Boxes he used in the invasion.
