In Genesis chapter 38, Tamar is first described as marrying Judah's eldest son, Er. Because of his wickedness, Er was killed by God. By way of a levirate union, Judah asked his second son, Onan, to provide offspring for Tamar so that the family line might continue.
Although the readers know that God has killed two of Judah’s sons, Judah does not. He suspects that Tamar is a “lethal woman,” a woman whose sexual partners are all doomed to die. So, Judah is afraid to give Tamar to his youngest son, Shelah. As a result, Judah wrongs Tamar.

Tamar ’s twins were conceived in far less exalted circumstances. Tamar was originally married to Judah ’s eldest son, Er. Upon Er’s untimely death, she was given in levirate marriage to his younger brother Onan; but Onan, too, died childless.

Tamar was a young Hebrew woman who married into the family of Judah. As far as we know, she was a conservative, well-behaved young women. But her first husband died, punished by God for a crime. What crime? We don’t know. Now the story gets interesting.

When Er came of age, Judah arranged a marriage between Er and a Canaanite girl named Tamar. However, Scripture says Er was "wicked in the sight of the Lord," so God put him to death.
