Estimates vary, but it is believed that between 8.5 and 10 million soldiers died during the war, along with an additional 7 million civilians. In total, the war resulted in more than 16 million deaths and 20 million injuries.

Hace 4 días · The residents of Birtley gained over 4,000 new Belgian neighbours during the war. Birtley was chosen as the site of two munitions factories, staffed entirely by Belgian soldiers, their families and other refugees. The resulting community was nicknamed “Elisabethville”, after the Belgian queen Elisabeth of Bavaria.
