The only house commissioned, created and lived in by William Morris, founder of the Arts & Crafts movement, Red House is a building of extraordinary architectural and social significance. Designed by Philip Webb and completed in 1860, it was described by Edward Burne-Jones as 'the beautifullest place on earth'.
15 de abr. de 2024 · Webb’s first commission, the famous Red House, Bexleyheath, Kent, was designed for Morris in 1859; it is characteristically unpretentious and informal. Webb was a proponent of the picturesque exterior using contrasted materials; for example, his dark-paneled and white-painted interiors were enlivened by bare brickwork or exposed ventilator grilles.

Described by Morris as 'very mediaeval in spirit', the house was architect Philip Webb's first commission in 1859, and is designed in an L-shape with elements drawn from contemporary and Gothic architecture. Morris moved into the house with his wife, Jane Burden (1839-1914) in June 1860.
