The Wood Beyond the World represents a transitional style for Morris in a conceptual sense: he is still experimenting with how far to push the “transition” to the fantasy realm. The opening of the novel stresses an ordinary and mundane reality—Golden Walter is a wealthy eligible son snatched up by a women who is probably a social climber.
