It's hard to imagine an Iron Maiden album that would be greeted by the public more odiously than The X Factor. In some ways, this album is underestimated and misunderstood, but it is magnificent and a masterpiece. You just need to look at it a little wider and approach it without expecting to hear something in the usual manner.

The X Factor wurde in der Presse meist zurückhaltend bewertet. Man wollte Blaze Bayley mit seinem für Iron Maiden neuen Gesangsstil eine Chance geben. Das Album wurde teils als drucklos, zu progressiv und zu düster bewertet, die dunklere Stimme von Blaze Bayley passe aber dennoch in das düstere Konzept.

At over 70 minutes, this album paved the way for future albums of similar length, like Brave New World, Dance of Death, and A Matter of Life and Death. To this very day, the album remains one of the more unpopular Iron Maiden albums, along with Virtual XI.
