Today, it is easy to forget just how visible public execution and the wider infrastructure of punishment were to Londoners before 1868. But for centuries, the infamous Tyburn Triple Tree and other gallows and gibbets cast their shadows over the city, making the threat of a painful public death ever present in the minds of Londoners’.
In 1571, the famous "Triple Tree" was set up at Tyburn to replace the previous smaller gallows and was, at least once, used for the hanging of 24 prisoners simultaneously. This was on the 23rd of June 1649 , when 23 men and one woman were executed for burglary and robbery, having been conveyed there in 8 carts.

First record 1730. The Tyburn House. Dating from c1730, the name was taken from London's Tyburn, a place of execution from Norman times until the late 18th century. The implication is that this too was a place where a gallows stood. Certainly the Chester Road from here beyond Sutton Park Park had a reputation for highway robbery.
