Valencian is traditionally spoken in the densely populated coastal areas rather than inland, where many places have Spanish as their traditional language, also those areas incorporated into the provinces of Alicante and Valencia at their creation in 1833 and which did not form part of the historical Kingdom of Valencia.
Valencian is considered a separate language by about half the people in Valencia, while others consider it to be a variety of Catalan. It is classified by linguists as a Western dialect of Catalan, and the Valencian Language Academy (Acadèmia Valenciana de la Llengua, AVL) considers Valencian and Catalan to be two names for the same language.
