In this paper, taking a cue from the image provided by Walter Benjamin, I argue that the work of the psychiatrist can be compared to that of the ragpicker who collects what others consider to be ‘waste’, rescuing it from oblivion and transforming it into a key resource for treatment.

I realize our experience with AI differs a lot from what the world went through in Benjamin's time; however, I think some of these differences are superficial and there is a lot to learn from history.
