This page looks at the German wars and conflicts since the birth of the “modern” Germany after the Franco-Prussian War (or French-German War) of 1870-1871. This conflict brought several independent German states and kingdoms together to form the German Empire.
By 1900, the possibility of a conflict between Germany and Britain loomed larger, as Germany built up its own (much smaller) colonial empire, and started a naval race to try and catch up with Britain, the world's dominant naval power.
The German Empire was founded on January 18, 1871, in the aftermath of three successful wars by the North German state of Prussia. Within a seven-year period Denmark, the Habsburg monarchy, and France had been vanquished in short decisive conflicts.
