    Eddie Blake was sent by Sally Jupiter to San Francisco to convince her daughter, Laurie, to return to her. He accomplished this by abducting her boyfriend Gregat the hospital, and then forced him to write a staged letter of rejection and join the Marines. As he dropped the letter on Laurie's dresser he sees a handful of smiley face pins, and takes one. He then carries the pin as his symbol for the rest of his life.
