Hace 2 días · In June 2009, the government of Greenland, the Naalakkersuisut, made Greenlandic the sole official language of the autonomous territory, to strengthen it in the face of competition from the colonial language, Danish. The main variety is Kalaallisut, or West Greenlandic.

Hace 5 días · Languages. Greenlandic (West Greenlandic or Kalaallisut is the official language; Tunumiisut (East Greenlandic) and Inuktun (Polar Inuit Greenlandic) are two other native languages, considered dialects of Kalaallisut, spoken by approximately 10% of Greenlanders), Danish, English.
In any case: the West Greenlandic language is surprisingly lacking dialects, which indicates that there was probably a lot of interaction between clans throughout this region - but only neighbour to neighbour, so an Inuk in Uummannaq had probably no clue what was happening in the Western, let alone the Eastern Settlement of the Norse.

In Canada, 133,000 people reported speaking an Indigenous language at home in the 2011 census. In Greenland, about 90% of the population speaks Greenlandic, the most widely spoken Eskaleut language.
