Formed in 1854 in opposition to the extension of slavery into the Kansas and Nebraska territories, the Republican Party held its first national convention in 1856. No delegates from the Deep South attended. In 1860 Abraham Lincoln narrowly captured the party’s nomination on the third ballot.
