On January 13, 1846, Polk ordered General Zachary Taylor to advance to the Rio Grande. A Mexican force crossed the river at Palo Alto, and a battle took place on May 8, followed the next day by the Battle of Resaca de la Palma. Polk claimed to Congress that Mexico had “invaded our territory and shed American blood on American soil.”

After the defeat of its army and the fall of the capital in September 1847, Mexico entered into peace negotiations with the U.S. envoy, Nicholas Trist.
