De Kooning completed Excavation in June 1950, just in time for it to be exhibited in the twenty-fifth Venice Biennale.

De Kooning concluyó su «Excavation » en junio de 1950, pues el cuadro debía estar presente en el pabellón estadounidense en la Bienal de Venecia; era la primera vez que De Kooning participaba en una exposición importante en el extranjero. En noviembre de 1951 recibió el Purchase Prize del Art Institute of Chicago.
